Black Forest Cake

Lest anyone tell you that I can’t appreciate the simple things in life…voila. Nothing fancy about this cake. Just tasty chocolate cake layers and crumbs, whipped cream, cherry filling and cherries to top it all off.

Christmas Igloo Cake

Well this is a bit late in getting up, but better late than never, right?

A family of snowpeople celebrate Christmas.

This cake looked much better in person than it does in photos. You can’t see how the snow sparkled, but anyway I still like it. This was vanilla cake with white chocolate buttercream filling and frosting, and would serve around 15-20. Happy (belated) holidays everyone!

Volcano Birthday Cake

This is a volcano cake I made recently for a very cool mad scientist-themed birthday party.

The lucky birthday boy has maybe the coolest parents in the world; they put dry ice in the top of the cake to create a smoking effect.

The cake inside is vanilla bean, with layers of strawberry filling for good measure, and covered with fondant. I wish I had gotten pictures of the volcano before I covered it with lava; it was really quite awesome. The lava is mainly royal icing, and has some piping gel in it for shine. The book is also made from vanilla cake with strawberry filling, covered with fondant and although it’s hard to tell in this picture, it is titled “Weird Science.” The test tubes are shot glasses I found coincidentally, and the mysterious scientific stuff oozing all over the board is coloured piping gel.

Although the lava is a little more day-glo than I had meant it to be, I think the whole thing is quite striking.

Mother’s Day Cake for … Well, Mom.

Mom\'s Cake

Mother's Day Cake for Mom

Mother’s Day has come and gone, and with it, this yummy cake that I made for my mom. This was a yellow cake, frosted with vanilla buttercream (the best batch of Italian Meringue Buttercream that I have made, in my opinion) and filled with mocha buttercream. It is sitting on an embossed, fondant-covered board (apparently I loved that technique!) and is decorated with royal icing leaves, roses, drop flowers, daffodils, pansies, an apple blossom or two and one chrysanthemum. The border is reverse shells, although in some spots it doesn’t look very reverse-y. My one regret is that the word “Mom” is crooked!! I must have had the cake crooked on the turntable when I wrote it. D’oh. Oh well, my mommy loves me anyway, haha.

SWEEP!

SWEEP!

Here’s a recent cake, for once. This one was a yellow cake (from my new favourite yellow cake recipe, “Essential Yellow Cake” from the book Wedding Cakes You Can Make by Dede Wilson) with a lemon butter filling, covered with a thin layer of vanilla buttercream (an OK Italian Meringue Buttercream from a recipe I probably won’t use again) and rolled fondant (the McCall’s brand, which is HEAD AND SHOULDERS BETTER than the WIlton kind!!)

I wasn’t happy with the writing on this cake at all. It’s crooked, and block-y, and I didn’t like it one bit. I also dropped the FoodWriter and made a mark on the cake, so I had to make the line where the mark was - hence why the lines do not meet in the centre of the button. Anyhoo, I would get a chance to re-do my writing the day after I made this. I left it on the table in a cardboard cake box, and when I got up the next day my cat had SAT ON THE BOX AND CRUSHED THE CAKE. I’m not even kidding. Thankfully, it was salvageable, and my second go at the writing looked much better. Yipes.
